Why use an AI career coach
A human career coach costs $75–$300 per session. For most students hunting their first internship, that's out of reach. A well-prompted AI model can cover 80% of what a coach does at that stage: resume triage, keyword-matching to a job description, cover letter drafting, mock interviews, and skill-gap analysis.

Miss any one and the output drifts back to generic advice.
Internship hunting prompts
Act as a career strategist for a [YEAR/MAJOR] student. Based on this resume [PASTE], build a shortlist of 15 companies actively hiring [ROLE] interns in [LOCATION/REMOTE]. For each: company, why it's a fit for me specifically, typical intern posting title, and where to apply. Rank by realistic chance of an offer given my background.
Act as a hiring manager who wrote this JD [PASTE]. List the top 8 signals you'd look for in a resume and the top 5 red flags. Then rate my resume [PASTE] against each signal from 1–5 with one specific improvement per signal.
Write 3 LinkedIn messages to a [ROLE] at [COMPANY] asking for a 15-minute call about their internship program. Each message under 300 characters, no flattery, one specific question tied to their recent work. My background: [1-LINE].
Build me a 6-week internship application plan. I can commit [N] hours/week. Include: number of applications per week, referral outreach targets, one skill to build, and a Friday self-review question. Output as a table.
Resume optimization prompts
Act as a technical recruiter. Spend 6 seconds on this resume [PASTE] and tell me: what role you'd assume I'm applying for, the 3 things that caught your eye, and the 3 things that made you consider passing. Be blunt.
Rewrite each bullet on this resume [PASTE] using the format: [strong verb] + [what I did] + [tool/method] + [quantified result]. If a bullet has no measurable result, ask me one question that would surface one. Keep each bullet under 20 words.
Compare my resume [PASTE] against this JD [PASTE]. Output: keywords present, keywords missing but truthfully applicable, keywords I should not fake. Suggest natural placements for the missing ones inside existing bullets.
Given my resume [PASTE] and target role [ROLE], recommend the section order that puts my strongest signal first. Justify each move in one sentence.
Cover letter prompts
Write a cover letter for [COMPANY]'s [ROLE] internship. Use my resume [PASTE] and this JD [PASTE]. 3 paragraphs, under 250 words. Open with something specific to the company (not "I'm excited"). Middle paragraph ties one project to one JD requirement. Close with a concrete next step.
Rewrite this cover letter [PASTE] to remove phrases a hiring manager would flag as AI-written: "in today's fast-paced world", "leverage", "passionate about", "delve", "seamlessly". Keep meaning, tighten by 15%.
Interview prep prompts
You are a [COMPANY] hiring manager. Run a 5-question behavioral interview for a [ROLE] intern. Ask one question at a time, wait for my answer, then score it (STAR structure, specificity, relevance) 1–10 with one concrete improvement. Start now.
Based on [COMPANY]'s public tech stack and typical [ROLE] intern interviews, generate 10 technical questions ranked easy to hard. For each, list what a strong answer covers in bullets — don't give me the answer itself.
Write 3 versions of a 60-second "tell me about yourself" answer using my resume [PASTE], tailored for [ROLE] at [COMPANY]. Version A: recent-work first. Version B: motivation first. Version C: unusual angle. No jargon.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pasting the JD without the resume. The model can only tailor if it has both sides.
- Asking for "feedback". Ask for a score against a rubric and one change per item.
- Accepting the first draft. Follow up with "make it 30% shorter and remove hype words".
- Faking keywords. If the missing keyword isn't true for you, don't add it — recruiters ask.
- Skipping the role. "Act as X" changes the output more than any other instruction.
